Dr. Gerald J. Gargiulo

Dr. Gargiulo brings over thirty six years of clinical experience to his practice. He is a very popular speaker and has lectured at academic institutions, professional organizations and lay audiences in the U.S., England and Canada.

In addition to his writings and lectures on clinical issues, he has focused on the meaning of spirituality as it helps in understanding ourselves. His interests extend to philosophy and poetry as well.

Dr. Gargiulo’s most recent publication is a memoir Broken Fathers / Broken Sons (Rodopi Press, 2008). Other texts include Psyche, Self and Soul (Whurr/Wiley Press, 2004); he also co-edited and contributed to Soul on the Couch (Analytic Press, 1997). He has published over ninety articles, both academic and popular.

Dr. Gargiulo is currently on the editorial boards of Psychoanalytic Psychology and The Psychoanalytic Review, he is also an associate editor of Contemporary Psychoanalytic Studies (Book Series/Rodopi Press). He is past president of the Training Institute of NPAP, and the International Federation for Psychoanalytic Education (IFPE).

Dr. Cheryl Kurash

Dr. Cheryl Kurash, a licensed clinical psychologist, works with the Wellness Center at St. Joseph’s College and maintains a private practice of psychotherapy and mindfulness training in Setauket. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine in psychoanalytic clinical psychology and has served as Coordinator of Mindfulness Programs at the Counseling and Psychological Services, Stony Brook University; Director of APA Psychology Internship Training at SBU; and Associate Professor of Psychology at SUNY/Empire State College.

Dr. Kurash presents nationally and has published articles in mindfulness, adolescent depression and women’s issues. She has studied various traditions of contemplative practices for over 25 years and completed extensive Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Training through the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. An avid swimmer, her own mindfulness practice has led her to explore mindfulness of the body in water and cultivate a practice of swimming meditation (SwM). She will be teaching this practice in Spring/Summer 2011.

Dr. Amira Simha-Alpern

Dr. Simha-Alpern is a licensed psychologist, a certified psychoanalyst and a certified clinical supervisor. She is the founder, director and faculty at The Potential Space for Continuing Education in Psychology and Psychotherapy, an adjunct faculty and supervisor at the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University, an adjunct faculty at the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University, and a faculty at the Suffolk Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.

Until recently and for over 11 years she had been a senior psychologist and supervisor at Stony Brook University's Counseling Center. She published and presented papers in the areas of eating disorders, multicultural identity, anxiety, trauma, inhibition, shame and therapeutic relationships. Dr. Simha-Alpern completed her psychoanalytic training and supervision program at the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University. She has addition training and special interest in attachment theories and parent education and guidance.

Dr. Samuel R. Taube

Dr. Samuel R. Taube, LCSW-R, has a general practice in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, serving children, adolescents, adults and couples. He holds a post graduate certificate in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis and is a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work.

Dr. Samuel R. Taube is a Faculty Member of the Suffolk Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and has served as a Field Work Supervisor for the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University. In addition to his clinical work and teaching, he has presented at national conferences and has been a consultant to area colleges on a variety of management and personnel issues.
